Glad to have won this week the #UALProcess prize and have my work listed on UAL's official Instagram page #unioftheartslondon:
“Quiescence” explores themes of sleep/wakefulness, horizontality/verticality. It aims to raise awareness of post-viral long term diseases such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Long Covid, for which there are currently no cures but only self management.
Those affected describe their condition as being “in limbo, in a grey zone of neither being fully alive or dead”.
When working with clay slabs, l mirror with my process the condition, as the clay needs to rest after rolling and before being shaped, otherwise it looses integrity and flops. Clay lends itself simultaneously as a metaphorical and therapeutic material, forcing the maker to slow down and pace themselves, much like what post-viral ill people need to do in order to manage their condition and maintain functionality over time.
My work and that of the whole BA Ceramic Design class of 2023 will be exhibited at our degree show in UAL Central St Martin's, Kings Cross, London on June 13-18. Everyone welcome, we are a friendly bunch!
